Interlock switches currently are in use at high volume both in Europe and in the US for seat belt buckle presence detection. Melexis manufactures ICs for fail safe read out of current modulated switches in the seat belt buckle.

Many seat belts are equipped with 'pretensioners', which preemptively tighten the belt to prevent the passenger from jerking forward in a crash. Melexis manufactures a seat belt pretensioning actuator.
